Winterland

Art Gallery on Darling, Balmain

15th - 20th July 2025

‘Winter, a lingering season, is a time to gather golden moments, embark upon a sentimental journey, and enjoy every idle hour.’

John Boswell

Winterland is a site-specific installation by Steve Starr that embarked on an exploration of winter in Australia. At the age of 21, Starr wrote a song titled

‘Winterland’. It reflects the golden winter light in the bone structure of places I used to frequent and still do. Sydney in winter has glorious clear blue skies, a dull soft golden light, crisp low humidity and frosty nights along with our winter storms and east coast lows. Unlike Europe or Canada, we can interact and enjoy our environment even in the middle of winter.

Curated by Sophie Alamango, Madelaine McGrath & Zac Middleton, Winterland featured many individual works that were created site specific to the Balmain, Birchgrove & Parramatta River neighbourhoods.

‘One can follow the sun, but I have always thought that it is best to know some winter, too, so that the summer when it arrives, is the more gratefully received.’

Beatriz Williams.

‘Sydney Boys’ 2025, screen print on Illford Fine Art Paper 30 cm x 50 cm, was selected as a finalist in the Naked & Nude Art Prize 2025 at the Manning Regional Art Gallery in July 2025. ‘Sydney Boys’ is a digitally manipulated collage print derived from a 1930s German FKK photograph mounted with a 2025 photograph of Sydney Harbour from South Head. The work celebrates Sydney’s out & proud gay community.
