The painting style I chose was based on the 1980s- 1990s punk rock aesthetic of the likes of bands such as the Breeders and Sonic Youth. Both of these acts have strong women performers (Kim Deal: Breeders and Kim Gordon: Sonic Youth). These women do not mind being on display and the subject of both the male and female gaze. However they do it on their terms as ‘public people’.

With this work I engage with the concept of the ‘gaze’, be that the male, female, gay, lesbian or fetishized gaze. My central painting I made during the projection studio session in week three provides the foundation for the work.
